A view of the newly restored Harrow Speech Room
November 19, 2024

Restoration of Harrow School Speech Room

Following a project that spanned several years, the newly refurbished Speech Room at Harrow School proudly reopened after an intensive seven-month restoration. This refurbishment was carried out to commemorate Harrow School’s illustrious 450-year history, paying homage to its long-standing legacy and commitment to academic and cultural excellence. The extensive renovation project was approached with respect for the building’s historical significance, ensuring the space is both preserved and rejuvenated for future generations of students and guests.

The Speech Room at Harrow School, designed by the renowned architect William Burges in 1877, is a masterpiece of Victorian design and ingenuity. Burges, celebrated as one of the great Victorian artist-architects, was known for his commitment to the Gothic Revival style, combining the elegance of medieval craftsmanship with the advancements of the Victorian era. The Speech Room reflects this vision, blending intricate detailing with bold architectural statements, and was constructed during a period of rapid growth at the school, meeting the increasing need for a grand assembly space as Harrow’s enrolment rose dramatically.

Historically, the Speech Room has served as a venue for numerous prestigious gatherings, welcoming an array of dignitaries, including Kings, Queens, Prime Ministers, and foreign leaders. Beyond hosting notable public figures, the room is integral to the school’s cultural life, accommodating whole-school assemblies, prize-givings, musical performances, and theatrical productions, such as Shakespearean plays. This impressive venue not only celebrates Harrow’s rich heritage but also provides a versatile setting where tradition and modern educational values intersect harmoniously.
